Organizational Culture Differences In Some European Countries: Preliminary Results
In this study the differences in organizational culture in several European countries are examined. The analysis is based on data collected with the FOCUS-questionnaire, which measures four basic organizational culture orientations (rules, support, goals and innovation). This questionnaire is designed to measure organizational climate and organizational culture. Our study is based on scales measuring organizational culture, defined as a set of values and assumptions shared by organizational members which provide the basis for specific behavior patterns. Data was collected in 93 organizations from different sectors in eleven European countries. The results of discriminant analysis indicate that countries differ mostly on the basis of supportive and innovative organizational culture orientations, which are characterised by higher degree of organizational flexibility. Some methodological problems of these kind of studies, as well as the implications of results for change in organizational culture, are discussed.
