« Il n'y a pas d'alternative ». Zagreb et les changements urbains au tournant du siècle

The paper focuses on urban changes in Zagreb at the turn of the 21st century. The changes are analyzed as tensions of continuity and discontinuity in urban environment and discourse over the long modernization era. One city square and its recent changes provide the scene on which current social, economic, cultural and identity issues of urban everyday life are becoming visible, contested and negotiated. Through the example of this particular contested space broader national, political and economic processes (postsocialism, transition) and local incorporation of global trends (neoliberalism, consumerism, development of civil society) are discussed in the paper.
