Effect of bio-algeen G-40, a slurry additive, on slurry physicochemical and environmental characteristic

Stdy experiments were carried out at our laboratory, with bio-algeen G-40, a natural product obtained from a brown marine algae, Ascophillum nodosum, as a supstrate. The polyuronic acid moleculat structure of bio-algeen reduces the loss of ammonia from the slurry, rendering it more homogeneous and preventing crust formation. The results obtained showed a decrease in sedimentation percentage, pH value and malodour. The contents of organic matter, COD-Mn, BOD5, and of nitrogen compounds, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate, were found to slightly exceed the values recorded for control slurry. Accordingly, the addition of bio-algeen G 40 to pig slurry improves the housing microclimate conditions and makes the slurry environmentally acceptable.
