The influence of renewable energy sources on Jordan's current energy system
Jordan is producing almost all of its electricity from imported fossil fuels, mostly natural gas. With an increasing demand for electricity due to a steady rise in population and GDP and a constant increase of the fuel prices, Jordan’s energy bill is becoming serious issue. A possible solution for this problem is the implementation of wind and solar power, which Jordan has in abundance. This paper presents the influence of the penetration of wind and solar power technologies and the use of pumped hydro storage on the potential for the penetration of wind and PV, CO2 emissions, total annual cost of the system and the consumption of fuel in Jordan’s current energy system. Multiple scenarios were created with different installed capacities of wind power, solar power and pumped hydro storage plants with different storage capacities. The results of the model will show that it can be both economically and environmentally beneficial to implement renewable energy and energy storage in Jordan. The system is simulated by using the EnergyPLAN computer model.
