Numerical Analysis of Influence of EGR on combustion of Biogas fuelled HCCI engines and the Possibility to Use EGR for reducing the High Intake Temperature Requirements

Numerical study that analyzed the influence of combustion products (CP) concentration on the combustion characteristics (combustion timing and combustion duration) of a biogas fuelled HCCI engine was made. The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility of using internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) enabled by negative valve overlap (NVO) for reducing the high intake temperature requirement observed in biogas fuelled HCCI engines. The analysis used a validated engine model made in AVL Boost. The results showed that when CP’s are increased the required intake temperature for the same combustion timing must be increased. When NVO is used the cylinder temperature does increase, but the influence of CP almost entirely counteracts this effect. Additionally, it has been observed that with larger fractions of CP some instability of combustion in the calculation was obtained which indicates that the increase of EGR might produce some combustion instability.
