Examination of some trauma predictors of people who live in post - traumatic setting.

Background: Recent research studies aim to examine the predictors of posttraumatic adaptation. The general aim of our research is to examine the predictors of posttraumatic adaptation among the population in Canton Sarajevo traumatized during the war. Subjects and Methods: Research was conducted on 200 participants, 97 male and 103 female, residents of Sarajevo Canton. Each participant has experienced at least one traumatic event during the war. The research procedure was based on interviews and tests that were administered to each respondent using the following instruments: the socio - demographic Questionnaire, the List of Stressful Events, the Brief Symptom Inventory ; the Manchester Quality of Life Scale ; the Impact of Events Scale. Results: The results of the study indicate a high presence of war trauma in our sample and a high subjective distress index among the examinees. The results also indicate a medium rate of PTSD symptoms. The presence of general psychopathology was low. With regard to the average perceived quality of life the examinees fall into the ‘relatively satisfied’ category. The effects of factors such as the frequency of experienced traumatic events and pharmacotherapy were statistically significant on all the dependant factors: PTSD symptoms, the presence of general psychopathology and the quality of life. Conclusion: The research results indicate a high level of trauma in our sample, but a relatively low presence of PTSD symptoms and general psychopathology. The participants reported a relatively high satisfaction with different aspects of life. The trauma level was a statistically significant predictor in posttraumatic adaptation for all factors. The predictors of professional help by a psychologist or a psychiatrist, as well as the help of members of one’s intimate circle and pharmacotherapy were statistically significant regarding some, but not all criteria. The results of this research are scientifically relevant since they provide a better understanding with regard to which aspects of post - traumatic adaptation may contribute to a better and more distinctive rehabilitation of people traumatized by war.
