Exposure to Emotional Abuse in Childhood and Psychological Adjustement in Adolescence

In comparison with other forms of abuse, emotional abuse gets less attention in research on the relationship between adult psychological adjustment and childhood emotional abuse. A history of this form of abuse may contribute to internalizing and/or externalizing psychological difficulties in adulthood. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of exposure to childhood emotional abuse in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to examine the relationship between current psychological adjustment and emotional abuse in adolescence. A questionnaire study was conducted on a convenience sample of 458 third year high-school students (61% girls and 39% boys), between the ages of 15 and 20 (median 17 years), from the Western Herzegovina Canton. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Youth Self- Report (Achenbach, 1991). Also used was the Child Maltreatment Questionnaire by Karlović ( 2001) based on the Comprehensive Child Maltreatment Scales for Adults ( Higgins & McCabe, 2001). Results showed that 40% of the students were emotionally abused. Significant associations between the maltreatment by mother, father, and other adults were found (r =.53 ; p<.01). As expected, exposure to emotional abuse in childhood is associated with difficulties in psychological adjustment. This is confirmed by significant correlations between emotional abuse and anxiety/depression (r=.340 ; p<.001), withdrawal (r=.277 ; p<.001), somatic complaints (r=.259 ; p<.001), social problems (r=.349 ; p<.001), thought problems (r=.32 ; p<.001), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (r=.397 p<.001), rule-breaking behavior (r=.305 ; p<.001), and aggression (r=.366 ; p<.001). These results indicate that the experience of emotional abuse in childhood is associated with internalizing and externalizing psychological difficulties during adolescence.
