Stability of self-assessment of health in the longitudinal study of elderly persons
Different health indicators self-perception of health, compared health, somatic symptoms, functional ability show different degrees of stability in time. Some indicators are more dependent on the ageing process and changes associated with it, while others are more stable and reflect some personality traits of the ageing person independently of his/her actual health status (health optimists and health pesimists). The question remains whether self-assessment of health changes during longer time period. The aim was to investigate the stability of different health indicators during the 15 years follow-up of the elderly people. Longitudinal study of the aging of urban elderly started in 1979. The second measurement point was in 1994. Subjects were 99 elderly persons, 37 men and 62 women. The average age was 58 years (range 45-73) in 1979, and 72 years (range 59-89) in 1994. The same health measures were administered in 1979 and 1994: health status, self-perception of health, compared health, somatic symptoms, functional ability and sociodemographic data. Data were collected by structured interview. Results showed the decrease in health status measured by different health indicators, except for self-perceived health, which remained stable. Different categories of subjects were compared according to their self-perceptions of health and other health indicators.
