Wisdom and health in adulthood

During the last years concept of wisdom has gained in popularity, particularly in the areas of the human development, successful aging, and personal growth ; and some researchers assert that wisdom is a key factor in the construction of a “good life”. Although for the moment a uniform definition of this concept does not exist, there is a general consensus that wisdom is a multidimensional construct. This study adopts the approach of Webster (2003, 2007) suggesting five components of wisdom: experience, emotional regulation, reminiscence/ reflection, humour and openness. The main aim of the research was to explore possible differences in some aspects of health between wiser and less wise persons. The initial sample comprised 323 persons (165 women and 158 men) aged 18 – 88 years. The Self-Assessed Wisdom Scale was used for measuring wisdom. According to their results obtained on the scale, participants were divided into two groups – highest (N = 34) and lowest (N = 52) wisdom scorers. Between the two groups differences were then explored related to some aspects of their health: self-assessed health, self- esteem, life satisfaction, depressiveness and anxiety. Wiser persons tend to have higher self-esteem, higher life satisfaction, lower depressiveness, and they reported better health. Role of demographic, social and personality factors as predictors of wisdom were explored. Obtained results support importance of wisdom in the context of psychological well-being.
