Determinants of confidence in public institution among youth

Trust and confidence in public institutions contribute to development of social capital necessary for economic growth and development, political success, and social well-being, and are also necessary for democratization. Level of trust between people and institutions influence the level of motivation for and the type of active citizenship and participation. Better understanding the determinants of confidence and trustworthiness is therefore important, especially among youth. The aim of this study is to investigate level of confidence youth have in national and international governmental and non-governmental institutions. Also, it is investigated in what degree confidence in different institutions is based on individual demographics and dispositions (e.g. religiosity, political orientation, general trust), general and specific attitudes and beliefs (e.g. toward minorities, violence) but also level of interest in, knowledge about, and attitudes toward current political issues and politicians. Data were collected by face to face interviews, from a random sample of young people aged between 16 and 25 (N=1200), as a part of My Place project. Analyses are performed in order to investigate the most important determinants of confidence and trust in (inter)national (non)governmental institutions, assuming that level of trust will vary among those types of institutions, and that beyond individual characteristics and individual’s social position, identity or conditions associated with a social capital, level of trust will be the product of the particular institutional performance and/or their symbolic value among youth.
