Determination of population adjusted basic motor developmental milestones at preschool children in Croatia
Adjusting instruments for estimating children’s development to certain culture can be translated in an attempt to find representative sets of indicators in certain developmental aspects. Developmental milestone is a skill acquired within certain time framework: they are sets of functional skills, or specific tasks that the majority of the children of the certain age can successfully complete. In this research, we have aim to find basic developmental milestones in children’s motor development at six age groups of preschool children (boys and girls), included in kindergartens in Croatia: aged 1 to 2 (173), aged 2 to 3 (208), aged 3 to 4 (256), aged 3 to 4 (284), aged 5 to 6 (257), aged 6 to 7 (298). Number of analysed developmental milestones that initially represented sets of motor functional characteristics varied in range from 31 to 54, depending of age group. In data analysis, Principal Component Analysis is used, with Varimax rotation, to obtain latent dimensions of the basic developmental milestones for motor development, for boys at girls separately in certain age group. Future extensions of this approach go in direction of finding the most appropriate activities for children, aimed for stimulating belonging basic milestones, in motor and other developmental aspects. Direct associating milestones and activities the most convenient for their stimulating through ICT software, can provide user-friendly tool, which can be easily used by children’s parents and teachers.
