Ideologies, politics and (non)participation of youth: research perspectives from Croatia

There is a stream in contemporary social theory, mostly within the post-modern perspective, which tries to overcome traditional divisions ; old paradigms, as well as left-wing and right wing ideologies (socialism, liberalism, conservatism, nationalism) are exhausted and not valid in our attempt to understand the world. Accordingly, old notions and theories, (especially thesis on linear progress) should not form a significant part of conceptual framework when it comes to analyses of contemporary social life. The future of politics lies in new political movements, not in bureaucratic political parties. This perspective is based on the academic insights into social and psychological processes of the present-day (western) world. The main aim of this paper is to explore the links between such theoretic perspectives and key findings from our own research on youth, memory, political legacy and civic engagement. Within the large international EU funded FP7 project MYPLACE (http://www.fp7-myplace.eu/index.php), in order to map types of activism, to measure participation, to explore how participation and engagement is shaped by the shadows of totalitarianism and populism, in order to understand the process of (re)production, transmission and (re)interpretation of political heritage, we used quantitative and qualitative research methods. This paper is based on the data collected by face to face survey on representative probabilistic samples of young persons (16-25 years) on two locations (city districts) in Zagreb, Croatia (N=1217), as well as on the data collected by follow-up semi-structured interviews on the subsample of surveys participants (N=61).
