ELECTROCHEMISTRY OF COMPLEXED COPPER(II) AT SEAWATER CONCENTRATION LEVELS
The electrochemical reactions of the copper(II)-salicylaldoxime complex (Cu(II)-SA) adsorbed onto mercury drop are influenced by the neutral buffer 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES). The reduction currents of the Cu(II)-SA complex in 0.55 M NaCl and 0.7 M NaClO4 solutions increased by a factor of two in the presence of the HEPES (pH = 8.0), whereas the reduction potential shifted to more positive values. The weak adsorption of the HEPES onto mercury drop facilitates the electron transfer between the mercury electrode and the adsorbed Cu(II)-SA complex.
