TRAUMA RELATED SYMPTOMS AMONG CHILDREN EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT TYPES OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT
The aim of this study was to explore the differences between trauma related symptoms among children exposed to different types of abuse and neglect. The complete form of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC, Briere, 1996) was administered on a clinical sample of children in the Child Protection Center of Zagreb (N=151), aged 7-17 years (M=12.6 ; SD=2.48). The sample included children who were physically (n=20), emotionally (n=49), sexually (n=51) or both physically and emotionally (n=54) abused, or neglected (n=33). The presence and type of trauma exposure was clinically assessed. Emotional outcomes were measured by TSCC (Briere, 1996), a self-report measure of children’s trauma- and abuse-related symptoms, consisting of two validity scales and six clinical scales: anxiety, depression, anger, posttraumatic stress, dissociation and sexual concern. Results have shown that children who have experienced different types of abuse or neglect show differences on all TSCC scales. Children who were sexually abused show higher levels of anxiety than emotionally abused and neglected children, more dissociative symptoms than emotionally abused children, and the highest level of sexual concern among all groups. Both physically and emotionally abused children show the highest level of depression symptoms, higher levels of anxiety and dissociation than emotionally abused children, as well as more anger than neglected children. Neglected children show higher dissociation scores than emotionally abused children, who also tend to have the lowest levels of posttraumatic stress. The findings are discussed with respect to their clinical implications, as well as strengths and limitations of the current study.
