Search for hadronic axions
The existence of axions, proposed as very light neutral spin-zero pseudoscalar particles, can solve the strong CP problem in quantum chromodynamics. Models of hadronic axions with E/N approximately 2 allow for near or complete cancellation of the axion-photon coupling constant. In this case there is no stellar-evolution limit on the axion mass (m_a), and for hadronic axions there exists a small window, 10 eV lessequal m_a lessequal 40 eV, between supernova cooling and axion burst arguments. Hadronic axions in this window are also good candidates for hot dark matter. The most promising methods for verification of this window are observation of an axion burst from a future supernova and resonant absorption of almost monochromatic solar axions.
