Some issues on shiftwork and safety
A short review of some recent data on various shiftwork issues is presented. Introduction of 12-hour shifts is considered taking into account both its advantages and disadvantages. Some characteristics of workers which are related to their tolerance to shiftwork are reviewed. Special emphasis is put on a study examining structural relationships between a set of personality traits and behavioural patterns, on the one hand, and a set of various indices of tolerance to shiftwork on the other. The study reveals the existence of two specific kinds of tolerance: night shift tolerance and morning shift tolerance that show different links with workers characteristics. The role of coping strategies and some guidelines helping workers to cope with shiftwork are considered. The data on relationships between sleepiness, errors and accidents are examined.
