This study examined the relationship between narcissism in two nonclinical sample: 32 media exposed women and 176 women who are working in „non-media“ professions. For conceptual definition of narcissism, a 72 item instrument, Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire was developed. A factor analysis identified a structure of the six narcissism measures, suggesting six dimensions (subscales): 1. special feeling of self-importance, 2. preoccupation with fantasies of beauty, 3. perception of self-overidealisation, 4. grandiosity, 5. desire for self-admiration i 6. perfectionism, which accounted for 54.7% of the variance. These six subscales were based upon behavioral descriptors of Narcissistic Personality Disorder contained in the DSM-IV. Taken as a whole, this study give encouraging evidence that the new subscales provide an useful preliminary group measure of the dimensions of narcisisstic personality. |
