Distribution of trace elements in whole blood, serum and urine of men with testicular cancer
The imbalance between toxic and essential elements in the organism can lead to increased sensitivity and contribute to the development of malignant disease. Concentration of selected trace elements was measured in whole blood, serum and urine of 99 subjects with newly diagnosed testicular cancer (TC) and 55 control subjects. We found significantly higher concentration of Fe and Pb in whole blood and serum, and As in serum of TC patients. Concentration of Na, Mg, Ca, Cu and Se was significantly lower in serum of TC patients. However, when measured in whole blood, concentration of Na, Mg, Ca and Cu was higher in TC patients than in control group. In urine of TC patients, we found significantly lower concentrations of Na and Cr, and higher concentration of Mn, Fe and Zn compared to control subjects. Taking into account the potential role of measured elements in the ethiopathogenesis of cancer, observed element redistribution may represent a risk factor for the testicular cancer development and/or progress.
