A multielement profile of Croatian strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) fruit and leaves
The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.) is a wild evergreen shrub characteristic for the Mediterranean region. The leaves and fruit of this plant are used in traditional medicine due to their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative properties. These health benefits are mainly originate from the phenolic compounds. Beside polyphenolic health-promoting properties, the presence of minerals and vitamins suggests additional health effects. Previous studies have reported that the strawberry tree fruit is a good source of essential elements important for maintaining normal biological functions. General element content was found to be in the following order: K > Ca > P > Mg > Na > Zn > Mn in fruit samples from Turkey, Spain, and Croatia. The aim of our research was to determine the elemental content of strawberry tree leaves and fruit by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A multielement profile of these samples from different locations and harvesting years has been presented.
