Particulate Matter and Gas Pollutant Emissions of Biomass Co-firing: an Experimental Study in Drop Tube Furnace

Biomass has been widely used recently as a CO2- neutral fuel, but is associated with operational and environmental problems such as aggravation and corrosion, environment hazard for more fine PM emission, mainly due to the high content of alkali in biomass. Co-firing biomass with coal was found to relieve those problems existing during biomass combustion. However, the mechanism on the PM (particle matter) emission during biomass co-firing with coal was not insufficient and complete. This study aims to investigate the effect of blending ratio of coal on the particle matter and gas pollutant emission during biomass combustion in a drop tube furnace at 1350 °C. DLPI (Dekali Low Pressure Impactor, Finland) was used to collect the fine particles from nanometer to micrometer, and TEM- EDS (transmission electron microscopy–electron dispersive X-ray spectroscope, Japan) was used to analyze the inorganic element distribution and micromorphology at different sizes of particle. Results showed that the particle size distribution of PM10 during co-firing biomass/coal was bimodal with two peaks around 0.2 μm and 6.64 μm, respectively. Further analysis on the PM showed most of alkali, chloride and sulfur were enriched in fine particles, mainly existing as alkali chlorides and sulfates. While the coarse particles were mainly composed of aluminum, iron, magnesium, and calcium. It indicated that different aerosol formation mechanisms between fine and coarse particle matters. Alkali chlorides and sulfates are dominant in fine particles formation, while elements of Al, Ca, Mg and Fe are dominant in the formation of coarse particles.
