Environmental factors affecting racing time of trotter horses in Serbia
Aim of this study was to define statistical model and quantify genetic and non-genetic variation for racing time of trotter horses using individual race results and repeatability animal model. Data from the Association for Trotting Sport of Serbia (UKSS) for registered horses and races in the period from 1998 to 2010 was used. The database is comprised of data for 1263 horses over a total of 14398 races. After calculating average value and variability of racing times, the effect of the year and month of birth, sex, year and seasons of the race, age, race track, distance and method of start on racing times of trotters using the general linear model (GLM) was examined. Estimation variance component, heritability and repeatability were estimated with repeatability animal model using Wombat package. The average racing time achieved was 84.21s/km, and ranged from 73.8 to 132.2s/km. All examined factors had a statistically significant effect on the observed racing times. Heritability and repeatability estimates were high (h2=0.58 and R=0.65).Therefore, direct selection would result in adequate selection accuracy for this trait, but in modern animal breeding it is necessary use genetic evaluation of breeding animals.
