Changes of Phenological Stages of Olive-trees along the Adriatic Coast

According to the Köppen classification, the climate on the greater part of Croatian coast and islands is the moderate warm and rainy with the mean temperature of the warmest month above 22oC and with dry period in the warm seasons. This climate type is known as “ olive climate” because olive-tree accommodate very well to such climatic conditions. Considering that plants are sensitive to weather and climatic changes, it is expected that the changes in the ecological system should be the first to influence on the development of the plants. This is why the linear trends of development (phenological) stages of olive-trees along the Adriatic coast of Croatia were researched. The analysis is based on the phenological data of Rab, Hvar and Dubrovnik stations during the period 1956-1995. Considered stations cover the northern, middle and southern Croatian coast. The most important phenological stages of olive-trees are the commencement of blooming and ripening. During the last 40 years the trend analysis of these phenological stages has shown that the linear trend significant at the 0.05 level exists in the time series of Dubrovnik. Considering that, decrease of annual amount of precipitation in this location in the period 1956-1995 is observed, which could cause late blooming and ripening of olive-trees. The linear trend of ripening is faster than that of blooming. While the tendencies of earlier occurrence of blooming in Hvar and later ripening in Rab have been also observed significant trends of annual mean temperature and amount of precipitation have not been ocurred.
