Can problem-solving skills help university students alleviate stress?

There has been an increase in the number of university students manifesting severe symptoms of stress and anxiety in the last fifteen years. Besides typical everyday academic, financial and interpersonal issues and career challenges, students nowadays must also cope with specific economic, social and political situation in Croatia. Most students are resilient, but some may develop serious problems. Problem solving is an important general coping strategy that can improve person’s ability to cope with stress and prevent psychological maladjustment. The main goals of this study were: to explore the sources of stress and the level of distress among Croatian university students ; to determine their problem solving orientations and styles ; to check the moderator role of problem-solving in the effects of stress on their psychological functioning. Method: Students from University of Rijeka completed College students‘ sources of stress questionnaire (constructed for this research), Social problem-solving inventory – Revised short form (SPSI) and Clinical outcome in routine evaluation – Outcome Measures (CORE-OM). Main findings: The preliminary results show that students report high level of stress and heighten level of psychological distress. The most common and the most upsetting sources of stress are related to their academic functioning (e.g. too much work to do in a very short time) and lack of rest and sleep. Students who have negative problem orientation and avoidance problem-solving style report the highest levels of psychological distress and dysfunction. The results give some implications for creation of preventive programs that can help students develop more efficient problem-solving skills in order to alleviate their resilience to stress and to improve their academic and everyday functioning.
