The relationship between job-related emotions (JRE) and work behaviours has been well established in present research. However, some potential mediators remain unexamined. One such is work engagement (WE), defined as a positive, fulfilling, work-related state of mind that is characterized by vigour, dedication, and absorption, which is a popular concept as it can be a significant protective factor against burnout. WE has been identified as a mediator between job demands and counterproductive work behaviour (CWB) and organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB), however, to our best knowledge no study has explored similar effects with regard to emotions, even though it has been shown that engaged employees often experience positive emotions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the possible mediating effect of WE in the relationship between JRE and various work-related behaviours. As emotional contagion can produce a crossover of emotions from employees in the same team, and there are also indications of work engagement crossover, these effects need to be studied on both individual and group level. An on-line survey, comprising of self-report measures of CWB, OCB, In-role performance, WE and JRE, was conducted on 377 young researchers of heterogeneous profiles, employed in Croatian public sector. The hypotheses were tested both on the individual and group level, where 154 work departments in higher education institutions and research institutes clusters were formed. The results analysed within the Multi-Level Structural Equation Modelling (ML-SEM) framework supported a mediating role of WE in the relationship between JRE and work behaviours. Interestingly, this effect was more pronounced on the group level compared to individual level of analysis. This novel finding has important implications on future research on work engagement crossover, as well as on occupational health psychology praxis.
