TiO Bands and Effective Temperature Scales of M Giants

We present spectroscopic observations of 10 M type giants for which data in the near IR range lambda 7900-9400 angstrom are available. They are members of a star sample located in the Galactic plane. The measured relative intensities of TiO bands belonging to the gamma, delta, epsilon and phi molecular band systems have lead us to the determination of vibrational excitation temperatures of the corresponding absorption layers. In view of these results and by assuming LTE conditions in stellar atmospheres we discuss different Teff calibration scales for M type stars and draw conclusions on atmospheric thermal structure and stellar radii for the selected members of the observed star sample.
