An intermediate complexity AGCM simulations of climate response to a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide

Climate changes associated with doubled carbon dioxide concentration are estimated by analyzing 35-member ensemble mean made by an atmospheric general circulation model of intermediate complexity. Simulated changes in mean fields are evaluated for winter (January- February-March) and summer (July-August- September) seasons. Results show that doubling CO2 concentration causes warming around 2°C at all considered levels. The largest amplitudes of temperature change are found at the surface level over polar areas ; while at higher levels considerable warming is found mostly over the continental parts. Cooling is found over polar areas at 300 hPa level, while at higher levels temperature drops globally. Changes in jet stream occur at Northern Hemisphere with larger amplitudes in winter. Stratiform precipitation increase is significant at winter hemisphere in higher latitudes, while decrease occurs mostly over oceans. Convective precipitation increase is significant in summer season over Northern Hemisphere. Over southern part of tropical Pacific, stratiform and convective precipitation is decreased in both seasons. It is also demonstrated in the paper that indirect impact of increased CO2 concentration (i.e. associated changes in the lower boundary conditions – indirect CO2 impact) has a stronger contribution to global warming than direct absorption-radiation CO2 processes (i.e. direct CO2 impact).
