Emotional priming with IAPS pictures
Differences in processing pleasant, unpleasant and neutral emotional stimuli have been studied using different methods but with no consistent results due to differences in experimental design, stimuli or participants. In this research we measured reaction time in a priming paradigm with emotional pictures from The International Affective Picture System (IAPS) as stimuli. Pictures were divided in three categories ; valence, arousal and dominance. Arousal and dominance were equalized for all three different valence groups. Prime pictures were randomized within every valence category and consisted of emotional pictures, as well. Participants' task was to answer whether they found target picture pleasant or not. Differences in reaction times between emotional pictures regarding to their primes were analyzed. Longer reaction time was measured for evaluating unpleasant pictures and for evaluating pleasantness of target picture when priming and target did not match in emotional value. The lower score participants obtained on the optimism/pessimism scale, the longer reaction time was to evaluate pleasantness of neutral picture
