STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION OF A BULK CARRIER ACCORDING TO IACS CRS-BC
Structural design of the bulk carriers is performed according to the IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR-BC valid until July 2015 and currently valid H-CSR BC&OT). Direct strength analysis based on the three hold FE model of the cargo area was mandatory for all vessels above the 150 m in length.. To allow designer to fully realize all benefits of the direct strength analysis embedded into the formal optimization procedure, in-house structural design system was developed. It combines several commercial and in-house developed modules containing CRS-BC requirements (loads, feasibility), MAESTRO design system, multi-criteria optimization system DEMAK and interactive environment shell for data pre/post-processing. The developed design system was used for the structural design of bulk carriers (Newbuildings 725-726) to be built in ULJANIK Group shipyard 3.MAJ in Rijeka and the main results and achievements are presented in the paper. Beside shipyard and faculty design teams, the ship-owner team was actively involved in the design process with intention to introduce the best practice regarding the existing ships to the new design solution.
