Sažetak:
Coastal karst springs of the northern part of Velebit Channel on the Adriatic Sea coast are drainage points of an extensive effluent area. It includes sinkinkhole areas of Lika and Gacka rivers, as well as North Velebit karst massif dividing the sinkholes and the seashore. Large watershed provides abundance of water discharged on the number of coastal and submarine springs (vruljas). Great majority of groundwater discharge is located under the sea level, which presents a major problem for the discharge monitoring. Sea intrusion in the coastal karst aquifer usually causes increased salinity of the discharged water, even on the springs located above sea level. This generally prevents successful tapping of the springs for the water supply, and large quantities of fresh water are lost in the sea despite shortage of it. It is also a well-known problem in many Mediterranean Sea coast areas. Therefore, research of the groundwater discharges and sea water intrusion in the aquifer is of great importance. Thermal infrared satellite images analysis enabled recognition and comparison of significant discharge zones. Discharge quantity estimation was performed by a method based on the comparison with the known discharge points (Rubinić et al. 2007). A total of 24 springs have been identified on the subject coastal area, most of which are spatially grouped into three main zones: the Novljanska Žrnovnica and adjacent springs area, area of Jurjevska Žrnovnica (including Jurjevo town) and the relatively long area south of Jablanac settlement. Monitoring of water level, temperature and electrical conductivity enables an insight into the local dynamics of the karst system. In the areas of different coastal springs significant differences of dynamics was determined. There are possible indications of extensive underground voids at the Jurjevska Žrnovnica and the Bačvice springs, while this is not the case at the Novljanska Žrnovnica springs.
