The European perspective of the joint work of police and community in preventing and controlling crime
The absence of crime and the presence of social cohesion are some of the factors influencing the quality of life within a community. We live in an interconnected world which brings significant benefits and challenges to our society. Crime is a dynamic social phenomenon that needs to be studied using an interdisciplinary approach. The aim of this paper is to present the interdisciplinary work that resulted from the Horizon 2020 (Unity) project “Strengthening the connection between police and communities to maximise the safety and security of all citizens”, financed by the EU (653729) www.unity- project.eu. Although European societies are very diverse they have a joint interest in safety issues, from crime to other deviant behaviour. The goals of this project were to collect, through a comparative study, best practices of cooperation between police and communities in EU countries ; to develop a communication platform, as a tool for enhancing the interaction between police, citizens and other stakeholders ; and to create a training plan for providing information on modern police structures, activities and technology platforms aimed at joint problem solving and crime prevention with particular emphasis on ICT.
