The role of perfectionism in the achievement motivation

The achievement goals represent the mediators between self-based variables (e.g., reinforcement sensitivity ; RST) and outcomes (e.g., engagement). However, the relations between these variables may differ according to the perfectionism type. This study examines whether adaptive, maladaptive, and non- perfectionists, differ in RST, achievement goals, and engagement. The mediations between RST and engagement through achievement goals are compared for groups of perfectionists. The aim of the study was to explore the role of perfectionism in the achievement motivation, defined as achievement goals, in the context of learning physics. It was assumed that the relations between antecedents and outcomes of achievement goals will differ between three types of perfectionists (adaptive, maladaptive, and non-perfectionists). Participants were 299 high school pupils from Croatia. Data were collected by: 1) The Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Personality Questionnaire (subscales: behavioral activation (BAS), fight-flight- freeze (FFFS), and behavioral inhibition (BIS) system), 2) Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (subscales: High Standards, Order, Discrepancy), 3) Achievement Goals Scale (subscales: mastery-approach, mastery- avoidance, performance-approach, performance avoidance), 4) Engagement in physics scale (subscales: behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement). Maladaptive perfectionists had higher BIS, lower behavioral and emotional engagement compared to adaptive perfectionists. Non- perfectionists had lower mastery-approach and performance-approach goals than adaptive and maladaptive perfectionists, while maladaptive perfectionists had higher mastery-avoidance and performance-avoidance goals than other groups of perfectionists. The multigroup analysis revealed that BIS predicted cognitive engagement through achievement goals differently, depending on the perfectionism type. The current research showed that perfectionism has an important role in the achievement motivation in physics. Adaptive, maladaptive, and non-perfectionists differ in general RST, achievement motivation and engagement. Furthermore, it is important to consider the perfectionism type in further research and practice when the mediating role of the achievement goals in the relation between RST and engagement is being examined.
