Differences in personality characteristics between artists and scientists

A great number of art theoreticians emphasize that the art begins on the point where the distinction between art and scientific truth starts. The aim of this research was to find out difference in personality characteristics between artists and scientists regarding Eysenck’s personality dimensions and regarding Zuckerman’s dimension of sensation seeking. Two measurement instruments are used: Eysenck's personality questionnaire (EPQ) and Zuckerman's personality questionnaire Form V (SSS-V). The participants have been students from seven Faculties on University of Zagreb. Three of the Faculties have been Art Academies (Academy of Fine Arts, Music Academy and Academy of Dramatic Arts), and the rest were Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, Medical Faculty, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Pharmaceutical-Biochemical Faculty. The sample included 190 participants, 95 participants were artists and 95 participants were scientists. Comparing the results from artists and scientists with variables of Eysenck's personality questionnaire by t-test, we have obtained significant statistical difference ; t=2.45 p=0.042 in the neuroticism variable (artists achieve higher values), while in other variables (psychoticism, extraversion) the difference was statistically insignificant. In Zuckerman's scale of sensation seeking by t-test for independent samples, we have achieved statistically significant difference in ES (variable of experience and adventure searching) with t = 4.94 and p = 0.000, as well as statistically significant difference t= 2.94 and p =0.004 in DIS variable (variable of disinhibition, artists achieve higher results). For other variables (TAS= factor of excitement and adventure searching, BS= boring sensitivity) there was not a statistically significant difference. These founding is compatible with former investigations, which have shown that anxiety, emotional instability and neuroticism are emphasized at artists. It is possible that artists elect the art as profession, because through the artistic creation they can express the emotional tension, and the scientists elect the scientific career because they can so better control their emotions. We can say that artists have some behavioral aspects that differ from the scientists. The observed differences between artists and scientists and explanations are of course on speculative level. The right answer to the question what is the real cause is in this very moment not possible. This investigation has only remarked the differences.
