Lightning data as proxy for hail detection
Though measurements of hail in Croatia have been present for over 60 years, a comprehensive analysis has not yet been carried out. This presentation will show a brief overview of past research in Europe and comparison with research in Croatia. Furthermore, national-wide characteristics of hail will be presented based on the measurements from main meteorological stations. Results suggest high spatial and temporal activities although clear trends in hail activity are not visible. As part of the VITCLIC project, the focus was made on the County of Istria, which is one of the strongly affected regions in Croatia. Analysis includes almost all available archive data ; from main and climatological stations to rain gauge stations. These data were first extracted from the observation logs for the first time and thoroughly analysed. The spatial scale of only 3, 500 square kilometres is subject to strong variations. The time scale suggests the presence of hail throughout the year although most of the events are concentrated in the summer period. Also, positive trends in the number of hail cases have been observed although there are no significant changes in the number of days with hail. For objective weather type analysis, the numerical methods proposed by the DWD was used and tailored to our needs using ERAINTERIM data for the period 1979 to 2014.
