Objectives: Radiographic assessment of « ; ; bone quality» ; ; is of great value in planning any further dental treatment in different dental fields: orthodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgery etc. The aim of this study was to assess cortical thickness of the lower border of the mandible and to determine whether these linear radiomorphometric indices are correlated with different age, gender and malocclusion categories. Methods: Measurements were made by one experienced individual on 299 panoramic radiographs using a caliper (0.01 mm precision). Patients were divided in 3 age groups: 6 to 12 years (31.8%) ; 12 to 16 years (44.1%) and 16 to 18 years (24.1%), respectively. There were 151 males and 148 females. Twenty patients had Angle class II/2, 30 had Angle Class III, open bite was registered in 27 individuals and the other 222 patients had Angle Class I occlusal relationship. Results: The results revealed significantly higher values of gonion index (GI) on the right side of the mandible (p<0.05), which was attributed to the right side dominant chewing activity. All linear radiomorphometric indices increased significantly with age (p<0.01), which was expected. The cortical thickness at the angle of the mandible had the highest values in Angle Class III malocclusion individuals (p<0.01). Conclusions: It seems that a pattern and direction of masticatory muscle activity determine the extent of strain forces in site of masticatory muscle attachments at the lower border of the mandible thus affecting the extent of cortical thickness in particular region. Analysis of possible changes of cortical thickness could be used clinically for the evaluation of the growth and development of the mandible due to orthodontic therapy and changes of force direction.
