Although Croatia started to conduct research on the level of IT literacy in 2007, for such small open economy it is essential to have information about the use of ICT in order to increase its own competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to explore the importance of ICT in Croatia, with a focus on IT literacy analyzing data regarding the usage of ICT in households and by individuals. The analysis showed that IT literacy by individuals in Croatia in 2007 is at a low level. However, data for 2008 show that Croatia's intensively using ICT to increase its own competitiveness and to transform into knowledge based society. According to the Global Competitiveness Report, Croatia is currently located at 47th place regarding technological readiness and also the European Commission positively evaluated the progress Croatia made in the area of ''Information Society'' while maximum contribution is devoted to higher use of ICT in the educational process in order to generate citizens of knowledge based society in an early age and with a high level of IT literacy.
